Russian contractor buys total Potain fleet

9/16/2013 Moscow, Russia

Alfa Engineering & Construction, a leading Russian contractor, bought five Potain MCT 178 tower cranes to use at construction projects in Russia, the surrounding CIS markets, Iran and Turkey.  All five 8 t capacity cranes are operating at a major residential development in Moscow.

Alfa purchased the cranes from Global Cranes, which supplies the entire range of Grove mobile cranes and Potain tower cranes in Russia. Alfa previously rented cranes but the company decided to buy the MCT 178s as a smart investment for the future. Ahmat Kappushev, deputy project manager at Alfa explains:

“The MCT 178 is a highly versatile and user-friendly crane that we can use on projects today and long into the future,” he says. “Rather than renting cranes as and when needed, we can recoup our costs quite quickly with these purchases and start making significant savings by operating our own fleet. Plus our operators will always use the same type of crane, which streamlines our operations and makes us more efficient on the jobsite.”

The five MCT 178s are lifting general construction materials and pre-cast concrete slabs at the 6.3 hectare site. They are building seven new residential towers, the tallest of which will be 22 stories.

The first crane was erected in December 2012 and the last was added in February 2013. The cranes will remain at the site for the next two years. All of the cranes are working with maximum jib lengths of 60 m, and three are free-standing at varying heights up to 67 m. One is tied off on a building and is currently at a height of 99 m.

Potain’s MCT 178 was launched at the end of 2012 and is specifically designed to meet the needs of projects in Russia and surrounding CIS markets, Turkey and Africa. It offers improved transport, fast assembly and impressive load charts. The crane has a maximum free-standing height of 67.6 m. It can lift 1.5 t at the maximum jib length of 60 m. When fitted with a 45 m jib, the crane can lift 4 t loads at more than 40 m radius.

Alfa Engineering & Construction, a subsidiary of ATK Construction and Trade Company based in Turkey, has provided general contractor services to customers in Russia, the Middle East and CIS markets for more than 20 years.
