Potain will show the counterjib and cab for one of its large MD cranes at ground level on its booth at bauma 2013. Positioning the crane at ground level will give visitors a chance to inspect the heavy lift tower crane in detail, and also provides a perfect platform from which Manitowoc will launch its new 200 kW (270 hp) 270 LVF winch, which is designed especially for large Potain MD cranes.

Also on the Manitowoc booth will be an MDT 248, the newest and largest addition to the topless crane line that launched in 2011.

Alexandre Chanteclair, EMEA product manager for top-slewing cranes at Manitowoc, said the tower cranes at bauma 2013 will show design improvements in all aspects of owning and operating.  

“With new designs and new technologies, we have focused on improving our cranes in every aspect from transport and erection, through to operations and dismantling,” he said. “Both the large MD crane on show and the MDT 248 demonstrate new capabilities to customers in innovative packages that make their life easier.”

MDT 248

The Potain MDT 248 topless tower crane on the Manitowoc booth at bauma 2013 marks the first time the popular 10 t capacity crane has been shown at an event in Germany. The crane is the largest from the city range of Potain’s topless cranes and will be erected on a 60 m mast.

Like other Potain topless cranes, the MDT 248 is well-suited to crowded job sites where space is tight and multiple cranes are needed, as their design allows more cranes to overswing each other in a smaller space. As with other new Potains, the crane offers new levels of convenience in terms of transport, assembly and maintenance. 


The MDT 248 offers two options for rigging its top section. The cabin, tower heads and hoist can be lifted as a single element by a larger mobile crane for less assembly in the air and faster erection. For owners using a lower-capacity mobile crane, the cabin and tower head can be lifted as a single component (a 1.6 m section weighing 7,880 kg) and the hoist winch can be lifted separately. 

Centering pins make it easy for riggers to connect sections while assembling the jib on the ground. Riggers will also appreciate the step bar on each section for rigging the jib in the air. 

The counterjib on the MDT 248 can fold for transport. The crane’s upper works, including the counterjib, a 65 m jib and the 50 LVF hoist winch, travels on four trucks. 

The Potain MDT 248 is available with a 10 t or 12 t maximum capacity with a 37 kW or 56 kW winch. Both versions have a maximum jib of 65 m and feature the Ultra View cab. The crane can be used with 1.6 m or 2 m wide mast sections.
