Grove GMK6300L completes first lift in Germany

6/28/2013 Frankfurt, Germany

A Grove GMK6300L was put straight to work in Germany just two days after receiving its road permit. The 300 t capacity crane, which features the longest boom in its class, installed a police radio antenna on the roof of a 68 m tall building at the University of Darmastadt, near Frankfurt.

The GMK6300L is owned by Hellmich Kranservice, a crane rental company based in Erfenden, and is the largest all-terrain crane in the company’s 50-strong fleet, which includes five Groves. René Hellmich, the company’s owner, said he was delighted to add this impressive crane to his fleet.

“Faster, higher, stronger is our motto for this crane – it travels at 85 km/h, making journeys faster, and is quick to set up; it can lift higher; and it is the strongest crane on six axles,” he says. “That makes it ideal for a wide range of jobs. The university lift would normally require a lattice boom crane that takes much longer to set up. But the GMK6300L enabled us to complete the job in just two days.”

At the University of Darmastadt, the GMK6300L lifted a support structure and other materials to install a police antenna used for communication. The crane was rigged with a lattice extension, which increases its 80 m main boom reach to 107 m. The hydraulically operated extension can also luff hydraulically, making it much easier to reach different places during the rooftop lifts. In addition, a camera mounted on the tip of the jib meant radio communication was not needed. Instead, the operator used monitors in the cab to view the load and carefully maneuver it into position.
