Leading Thai high-rise contractor moves to Potain fleet

12/6/2012

One of the largest construction companies in Thailand, Syntec Construction, is gradually updating its fleet of 30 tower cranes, and steadily turning it 100 percent towards Potain. Currently 22 of the company’s 30 cranes are Potain-branded cranes, and each year it adds three new units. The latest deliveries from Potain are three MRC 225 As.

Nayot Pisantanakul, assistant managing director of Syntec Construction, said his company’s close relationship with local Manitowoc dealer SB Siam, which handles the Potain brand exclusively in Thailand, was a key reason for moving towards one brand.

“Potain cranes are so reliable, I rarely lose any sleep worrying about them,” he said. “We are extremely pleased with their performance and using them allows us to increase productivity on the job site. But one very important factor is the role that SB Siam plays. Through the Manitowoc Crane Care customer support program the company stocks the required levels of parts, and we know they can service the cranes when we need support.”

Syntec Construction can be working on over 30 developments at any one time and it is widely regarded as the leading partner for high-rise construction projects in Thailand. With so many cranes spread over so many jobs, it’s easy to understand why a comprehensive support network is essential to keep things moving forward.

At present, the company is building the 38 story UBC III Tower together with a 6-story parking lot. Four of the company’s
Potain cranes are working at the project, which started in
2011. They are all luffing-jib models: an MR 220, MR 90 and
two MRC 225 A cranes. The MRC 225 A cranes are among the newest, both being less than two years old. The cranes
perform general lifting services, including handling precast concrete sections, steel rods, concrete buckets and pipes in loads of up to 3 t.

Prior to working on the UBC III Tower, the company completed the Terminal 21 mixed-use development, which included a
42-story building measuring 202 m tall and a large shopping mall. Five Potain cranes were used at the project, which took just over two years to complete.

The MRC 225 A is a 14 t capacity luffing jib crane that offers a 55 m working radius. Nayot Pisantanakul said the crane’s speed and trouble-free use made it popular with the operators, while clients like its fast lifting performance.

“The MRC 225 A’s popularity is growing with operators and developers alike,” he said. “Working on major projects in the heart of the city gives it more exposure but we’re able to show the benefits such an efficient crane brings to job sites – particularly in built-up, crowded areas. We expect to add more of these cranes to our fleet in the future.”

SB Siam has worked with Syntec Construction since 2009. In addition to supplying all of the contractor’s Potain cranes, the Bangkok-based company provides full parts and technical support, as well as site preparation and crane erection through its position as a Manitowoc Crane Care dealer.

Established in 1988, Syntec Construction is a joint venture between one of Thailand’s leading steel pipe manufacturers and three of Singapore’s largest contractors. Syntec Construction has almost 60 operators on its books, with an in-house training program where the more experienced train the new entrants to the business.
