Grove GMK6300L helps Indonesian company expand oil capacity

Indonesian state oil and gas company Pertamina has taken delivery of a Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane for use in the expansion of its oil refinery in Cilacap, Central Java. The 300 t capacity all-terrain crane is the first Grove in Pertamina’s fleet of equipment. The crane was purchased through PT Altrak 1978, Manitowoc’s dealer for Grove cranes in Indonesia.
Irsan Zamhir, construction equipment sales at PT Altrak 1978, said that the mobility of the crane was the driving force in Pertamina’s interest.
“We have discussed with Pertamina other equipment sales in the past, so when the company explained its current needs, we were able to recommend the GMK6300L,” Zamhir said. “The reach and capacity of this crane are impressive, but what really interested the customer was its mobility. They were amazed at how quickly and efficiently this crane could be set up and moved from pick to pick.”
Pertamina purchased the crane for use at its Cilacap refinery, the largest in Indonesia. The refinery is undergoing an $800 million expansion, which began in 2011 and will continue until late 2014. By the end of the expansion, the refinery is expected to produce more than 410,000 barrels of oil per day, up from 350,000 bpd before the expansion.
One of the tasks for the new GMK6300L is to place concrete chimneys on newly-constructed towers.
“The big challenges in construction work on the expansion were not so much in capacity, but in reach,” Zamhir explains. “A crane was needed to place these 2.5 t chimneys at 106 m. When engineers at the oil company saw the GMK6300L’s ability to lift at height combined with the mobility you get from the MEGATRAK suspension and the crane’s all-wheel drive, they knew this was a machine that would suit any task.”
The GMK6300L’s MEGATRAK suspension, coupled with its steer-by-wire technology on the fifth and sixth axles, provides maximum mobility on or off the road. Steer-by-wire technology uses fewer components making for better use of space and optimized steering angles, reducing tire wear. The GMK6300L also features a seven-section 80 m boom, the longest in its capacity class. A 37 m jib is also available for even further reach.
Gilles Martin, executive vice president of Manitowoc Cranes in Greater Asia-Pacific, said the response to the GMK6300L has been outstanding.
“Since its introduction at bauma 2010, the GMK6300L has already proven a popular choice among customers, especially in Asia. GMK6300Ls are currently at work in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, China, India and now Indonesia, and the feedback has been extremely positive,” Martin reported.
Oil and gas company Pertamina, owned by the Indonesian government, operates six refineries in the nation which produce some 1 million barrels of oil per day. In addition to the ongoing expansion at their Cilacap facility, plans are also in place to expand their refinery near Balikpapan, East Kalimantan province.
