Manitowoc impressed CONEXPO 2011 visitors with two new additions to its Grove rough-terrain crane range. The company debuted the RT9150E, the new range leader, and the RT765E-2, an upgrade to one of the industry’s most popular rough-terrain cranes.
RT9150E
The Grove RT9150E is the largest rough-terrain crane in Manitowoc’s product line and the largest rough-terrain crane currently in production. It has a 150 USt capacity, along with a 197 ft main boom — the longest on any current production rough-terrain crane.
Doyle Bryant, director of product marketing for Manitowoc, said exceptional reach is a standout feature.
“This crane offers a maximum tip height of 312 ft, and that will impress people,” he said. “With the available length of main boom, it can reach places that previously required a jib. We’ve combined proven Grove technology from our all-terrain crane and rough-terrain crane technology to create the RT9150E, which we believe is the new market leader.”
The RT9150E combines the upperworks of a Grove GMK5165-2 all-terrain crane (known as the GMK5130-2 in markets outside the U.S.) and the lowerworks of the 130 USt capacity RT9130E rough-terrain crane. The result is a high-capacity crane that mounts to a compact and durable carrier.
The main boom on the RT9150E benefits from Grove’s patented TWIN-LOCK pinning technology, offering a lighter boom with greater strength. When working with the 197 ft boom, customers can achieve a maximum tip height of 208 ft 10 in. Maximum radius with the main boom is 180 ft and at this distance the RT9150E can lift 3,800 lbs.
In addition to its exceptional reach, the RT9150E is the strongest rough-terrain crane available from Grove. When working with its full standard counterweight of 39,000 lbs, the crane has a lift advantage nearly 60 percent greater than the next model in the line.
RT765E-2
Also displayed was the Grove RT765E-2, a 65 USt capacity rough-terrain crane. It is an upgrade to the popular Grove RT700E series of rough-terrain cranes.
Bryant said some simple materials changes have helped engineers increase capacity on the crane, but the company has maintained its most popular features.
“A change to stronger materials and cylinder strength has helped increase capacity throughout the main boom load chart,” he said. “But we kept the hydraulic single-axis controls which are popular with operators and make this crane well-suited for rental fleets.”
The RT765E-2 has a four-section, full-power boom that extends from 36 ft to 110 ft. Maximum tip height is 119 ft and it has a 100 ft maximum working radius.
The crane has an optional bi-fold swingaway extension that extends from 33 ft to 56 ft, which can offer users a maximum tip height of 174 ft. A 33 ft optional fixed lattice extension increases tip height further, up to a maximum of 150 ft. The crane’s inverted outrigger jacks have three position settings: fully retracted, 50 percent extended and 100 percent extended. An optional counterweight removal system can reduce hauling weight to 78,000 lbs. And the ability to install and remove the counterweight while the crane works with fully extended outriggers is configured into the LMI.
New cab
A significant design innovation on the RT9150E as well as the RT765E-2 is the new operator’s cab, the first from a new generation of Grove cabs that offer better visibility and comfort. The “full vision” design has more glass, including in the sliding door. The cab can also tilt up to 20 degrees on the RT9150E for operator comfort and visibility. Inside the RT9150E cab, operators have Grove’s EKS5 load moment indicator and ECOS electronic controls. As well as managing and monitoring the crane’s major functions, ECOS also gives feedback on a variety of conditions, including fuel level, low brake pressure, hydraulic oil temperature, transmission oil temperature and engine stop.
