BMM Ispat purchases Grove all-terrain crane for heavy lift work

2/10/2011 Manitowoc, Wisconsin, United States

One of India’s leading metal fabrication companies, BMM Ispat Ltd, is using a new Grove GMK6300 all-terrain crane to handle heavy lift work at its plant in Hospet, Karnataka.

Mrutyunjaya Senapati, director of corporate planning and development at BMM, said Manitowoc quality was a major reason for the company selecting Grove.

“We chose the Grove GMK6300 because the high-quality image of the company’s brand fits with our own brand,” he said. “We are both leaders in our fields. In addition, we had excellent discussions with
Tractors India Limited (Manitowoc dealer for crawler and mobiles cranes in India) and are happy the company can give us the support we need.”

The GMK6300 is a 300 t capacity six-axle crane. It has a 60 m main boom and a maximum available tip height of 113 m. The crane has a fully automatic Allison transmission and Grove’s patented Megatrak independent suspension system to offer optimal performance both on- and off-road.

For BMM, the crane is at the company’s steel plants, lifting a number of components including 40 t furnace structures and columns weighing between 8 t and 16 t at heights of up to 56 m.

Prem Nathani, Manitowoc’s national sales manager for mobile cranes in India, said the delivery of the GMK6300 to BMM marked the beginning of a bright future for Grove all-terrain cranes in India.

“The delivery of this crane clearly demonstrates the market potential India has,” he said. “This is the first 300 t Grove all-terrain crane in India, and we believe there is demand for bigger cranes than this. As a manufacturer, we offer excellent, high-capacity, all-terrain cranes, including the new GMK6400 — the world’s strongest crane on six axles — with a 400 t maximum capacity. We also offer the new GMK6300L, which has an 80 m boom, the longest in its class.”

All Manitowoc Crane Care parts, service and training will be supplied by TIL, which also sold the crane to BMM. TIL has its headquarters in Kolkata and offices located throughout India.

BMM is a leading supplier of iron ore and also a pioneer in sponge iron production, which is an alternative and more efficient method of producing iron from ore. The company is expanding its plant to allow it to reach an annual output of 2 million t of iron ore. This will make the company not only a national leader, but also one of the world’s largest companies in the field.
